Helping Others Tell Their Stories

Turning my passion into an income stream

I’ve loved writing for as long as I can remember. In 2018, I found a way to combine my experience as a paralegal with my love of writing and build a successful career as a content writer. I love what I do, but the market for content writing, even in specialized niches like legal writing, has become more challenging.

I’ve been casually exploring other side hustles to diversify my income stream should content writing take a downward turn. I have started taking on more editing jobs and making connections with potential clients outside the legal field. However, I had the nagging feeling that I was missing something.

Meanwhile, Medium has never been a significant source of income, but I’ve been writing here for years because it allows me the freedom to do the kind of writing I love. Personal essays are my jam. I love to tell stories that reflect on the human experience. Aside from the coffee money I make here on this platform, I’ve never considered attempting to monetize that.

Then, someone read one of my personal essays and said, “It’s a gift to be able to write well. I would love to leave my kids a wisdom book filled with lessons I’ve learned in this life.” At that moment, I discovered what I would love to do.

Helping others tell their stories

Whether it’s a few pages of wisdom, a memoir, or a story about Grandma’s life, I can take your story and write it in a way that is genuine, meaningful, and respects your voice.

I know this isn’t a new idea, but it’s the first time I’ve realized that it’s the kind of writing that gives me the most pleasure. Notably, it’s also the kind of writing that AI can’t do. You can write the facts, plug them into AI, and ask for whatever you want. But the truth is that machine learning can’t capture the human experience in a way that resonates with other humans — which is the goal of telling a story in writing.

I’ve done some legacy writing, creating eulogies, personal letters to aging parents and grandparents, and trauma writing, where I helped someone put into words what they had been through in a way that truly reflected their voice.

Now, the challenge I face is connecting with people who want this type of personalized service. I know it will be challenging to start from scratch trying to build clientele, but this is about so much more than making some money on a side hustle. It truly feels like a calling.
